We started at the Taum Sauk Mtn trail head and hiked west/north. The trail starts out through some gently rolling hills, taking you past the Mina Sauk waterfalls and The Devil's Toll Gate (rock formation). Later, you'll hike through Johnson's Shut-Ins (fantastic gorges with waterfalls & volcanic rock formations) and bag 7 or 8 peaks along the way. Elevations range from about 900' in the valleys to 1700' at the highest mountain top. Water was available (late April) from a few streams. Trails were reasonably well marked and infrequently traveled (in 2.5 days we saw one group of hikers and one group of horsemen). The trail is supposed to be used by hikers only, trails ranged from well groomed paths to treacherous loose, sharp rocks. The vistas from the bald-tops were terrific.
