The Chubb Trail traverses three different St. Louis area parks: West Tyson, Castlewood, and Lone Elk. There is a variety of terrain from rocky, steep single track trails replete with switchbacks to wide bottomland flats that run alongside the Meramec River. This is an out and back type trail. Hikers or runners can start at either the West Tyson end which encompasses the hilliest section or the Lone Elk end from which hikers descend quickly to the bottomlands of the Meramec River. There are restrooms at either end. Starting from the West Tyson trailhead, hikers will experience approximately 2.75 miles of rocky climbs, steep descents, simple creek crossings, dense cedar forests, multiple switchbacks, and lots of rocks and tree roots. By the time the bottomlands are reached, hikers will be on flat terrain that crosses an open grassland, a set of railroad tracks and slowly descends nearly to the banks of the Meramec River. This latter section is an easy hike and the underbrush is generally open until you begin to approach the Lone Elk end of the trail. For the last couple of miles, the trail runs right next to the river until it turns and begins up a long grade to the trailhead (or, in this case, trail end) in Lone Elk Park. It is a challenging trail run and a nice diverse hike given the change in terrain. It can be muddy after heavy rains or flooding along the Meramec. As a matter of fact, the lower part of the trail was recently (April 2008) closed due to flooding. Word of caution: this trail is frequently used by mountain bikers. People tend to be very friendly, but please yield to downhill bikers and runners.
