If you are going to Lake Superior there are 2 great places to hike- Pictured Rocks and the Porkies. You will find plenty of old growth hemlocks and hardwoods, cliffs and rock formations, and Lake Superior sunsets. The escarpment trail has many impressive views as it moves on top a long ridge that runs parallel to the lake. It leads to the Lake of the Clouds lookout (the tourist destination) and continues along the ridge as the Big Carp River trail. You will find great views of the Lake of the Clouds down below and the view to the west is around 20 miles. There's no water unless it has just rained and the small creeks are only a trickle then. It's the only trails that you will need to pack water. There is no water at the Lake of the Clouds visitor area, just bathrooms (waterless). The lake superior trail is great to hook up to from there, cause you came to see the lake right. It's muddy after a rain and it's usually bad during the spring (into may). There will be a lot of mosquitoes. The Presque Isle river is a great ending as it has some unique rock formations on the river bottom. That is the western end of the park. I think that the best inland river hike is the Little Carp River trail. It has the best camping spots and the river is warm enough for a dip. Lots of hemlock on the high ridge. Whatever you do, don't take the cross trail that runs parallel to the Little Carp trail, unless you like lots of bugs and swamp. It runs through the middle of an inland swamp.
