This is a portion of the Manistee National Forest that borders on Lake Michigan. You can park a couple of miles from the beach and walk in. Very easy hike although there is a ridge between the parking and the beach that may make a novice work some. Take your time and look for a good camp site off the beach. Expect to see a lot of boaters just off shore and some nude sun bathing although it is illegal. The wilderness area has state parks to the North and South. You can walk all the way down to Big Sable Lighthouse at Ludington State Park which is a nice day hike. You will need a water filter and insect repellent. Spring and early summer expect to be covered with black flies. Indian Summer is best but Lake Michigan gets a little colder then if you want to swim. There is a canister used to pay for camping at the trail head.
