Mostly wooded hiking on mostly wide, easy trails, on the interior of the island. Ringed by beaches, the east has the usual smooth rocks, and the west has sand beneath 100 - 200 foot high sand bluffs. During good weather, stunningly beautiful views, sunsets, sunrises, nightime skies on the coast and great swimming in Lake Michigan. The most interesting hiking I saw interior was along the shores of Lake Manitou, rugged, with herons, terns, signs of beaver, and maybe even some surviving racoons(?), but pray the mosquitos and flies are not bad when you go. I got lucky on my mid-July trip. For a wilderness area, I was a bit surprised at how many people were on the island, but I still had plenty of elbow room. There is water at the ranger station, but a water filter is a must if you plan to stay more than one night (unless you plan to carry a whole lot of heavy water).
