Cross Trail connects the Lake Superior Trail at the Big Carp River to the Little Carp River Trail (LCRT) about 2 miles north of the LCRT trailhead. This is a lightly used trail that can be a navigational challenge for even an experienced hiker. The trail passes through a hardwooded section of the park and is not well maintained. Markers are quite far apart and hard to see. We got side tracked early on with a deer(?) trail for a very short distance. What saved us from a longer walk was we paid attention to our map and the landmarks we picked out to look for didn't jive with what we were seeing. That was not the last time we wondered if we had followed a animal trail as the trails were overgrown with the lack of use by humans. There are 4+ creek crossings with a couple that are a little tricky both crossing and navigational wise. A 1-1/2 mile long swampy area occurs about 1-1/2 mile from the LCRT. While not extremely thick it was slow going because of crossing deadfall and overgrowth. Some of the rushes were over my head in some spots well over 6 ft (I am 5'7") and got a little spooky. I made sure to check the other side of deadfall to make sure no nasty surprised were waiting for me. There is some wildlife to see along the trail. We saw a doe and two fawns that had no idea what to think of us passing through their domain. We also saw bear signs (scat & tracks) in the thimbleberry thickets and some wolf tracks. Fill your water bottle early as water may be scarce during dry years and remember this hike will be work....
