The trailhead for the northern half of the Little Carp River Trail in the Porcupine Mts. State Park begins at South Boundry Road. The trail follows the river for approximately 8 miles to Lake Superior and connects to the Lake Superior trail. Little Carp River is one of the more scenic rivers in the park with 4 waterfalls as it winds downward to the lake. Moderate in difficulty but well travelled with hilly terrain and some steep rises from the rivers' bank upwards to ridges with breath taking views. The river has to be crossed twice during the hike. I would recommend a good walking stick, some comfortable shoes, and a well balanced pack. We used this trail to access a rental cabin at the trailhead of the Lake Superior and Big Carp River Trails. After a two day stay we hiked out via the Correction Line Trail. Two cabins are available to rent from the park service along the north 1/2 of this trail; the Greenstone Cabin next to the falls of the same name and the Section 17 Cabin both within 1 1/2 miles of the trailhead. I've stayed in both of them and by far the Section 17 is the best, very secluded. Cabins are supplied with pots, pans, a wood stove, ax and saw, table and bunks. You will need to bring in a good water purifier, food, and bedding. I would advise packing in a few staples such as toilet paper, matches, and lighting. Our t.p. was taken by a girl and guy that was staying in one of three cabins in our general area in a rude afternoon theft. Luckily we brought extra plus we stole our original paper back a couple hours later and warned the couple in the third cabin. If you can leave something like candles or t.p. for the next group to use.
