North Manitou is the larger of the two islands. Unlike South Manitou, North is almost all wilderness. There is a ranger station, some private property and some old farm ruins. You do have to take a ferry to the island. It runs about $20 r.t. and it's $5/night to camp. There are no fires allowed on the island but you can camp any where you would like - except on the beach. There are plenty of sandy sites off of the beach. The hiking is easy because most of the trails are flat. Venturing off the trail may not be accepted but it does add a lot more adventure. You can find yourself stuck in a 200ft ravine very quickly. The best time to go is in the fall to see the leaves changing. Summertime usually offers a healthy dose of bugs. There is a family of bald eagles that inhabit the island. Last time I wa there they were on the North side. If your looking for distance you can power out 15 miles a day easily. Hunting is allowed. They have a herd of deer they thin out every season. Plan on an extra day if the weather turns ugly. The ferry will not cross if the captain feels it's too dangerous. They will wait an extra day, or two, or three... Leave-no-trace is a MUST!!
