The trail enters the woods slowly but soon turns upward... straight up! This "trail" is actually considered a non-technical climbing route. Shortly up the trail is the descicion maker, a large rock requiring some agility to pass. This is where the weary or less dedicated hikers usually turn back. Most of the remainder of the trail crosses steep rock scrambles, climbs iron rung "ladders" and has you shimmying along thin ledges. This is not a trail for anyone who is afraid of heights but the views are very rewarding. The ascent is around 800 to 1000 vertical feet in under 1/4 mile. At the summit there are rolling feilds of rock and 360 degree views of Mt. Desert Island. Since most of the Precipice trail is one way traffic, it is wise to take a route to the north which loops back down to the parking lot. This route is also somewhat challenging but negotiable in either direction. I wouldn't reccomend the Precipice trail in bad weather because a slip at certain points would give you a fall of several hundred feet. Go early to avoid the crowds because it is a popular trail and well known to tourists.
