The southern part of the wilderness is somewhat rugged for the first 50 to 60 miles, however after passing over Whitecap Mountain(heading northbound), it descends into flatter land. The land however is still somewhat rugged, but it is a very scenic hike. It is also one of the most remote sections of the Applachian Trail. This is a section of trail where it is HIGHLY recommended that everyone take 7 to 10 days of food with them. At each end of the Wilderness, at highway 15, and at the Great-Northern Bowater Golden Road, there are signs that warn of making sure that you have enough food. There are no stores or post offices along the way. This however is probably one of the most beautiful if not the most beautiful part of the Appalachian Trail. It is this authors opinion that there are some beautiful views on that section of trail. This section however, is not recommended for people who have minimal to no experience in backpacking.
