I list this as a Mount Greylock hike but it really takes in several trails in the Mount Greylock State reservation. Mount Greylock, at 3491 ft is the highest point in Massachusetts. This hike takes in a lot of good scenery and is peppered with 7 or 8 great secenic lookouts along the way, even more if you go after the leaves are down. The reservation itself is several hundred thousand acres. There are many trails through the park. The Appalachian Trail amoungst them. This particular hike takes anout 5 - 6 hours, crosses the peak of Greylock but is not a particularly rigorous hike (depending on the direction you take). It would be advisable to obtain a relief map from the Appalachian Mtn. Cleb at the address below. I enter the park from the north on Notch road and park at the day parking area for the AT about 3 miles into the park. The good thing about Greylock is there are lots of different hikes you can take that will loop you back to your car without having to backtrack. I start by heading south to the AT and walk it about a 1/2 mile to the Mount Prospect trail. From ther take the Mount Prospect trail across the top of the mountain and down to the western base of Greylock which is known as The Hopper. From there you'll pick up the Moneybrook Trail through the bottom of the hopper to the Hopper Trail. The Hopper Trail takes you back uo the other side of the Hopper and onto the back of Greylock. From there take the Overlook Trail up to the summit of Greylock. Just befor the summit you'll pick up the AT north. If you go between Memorial day and Labor Day Bascom Lodge will be open on the Summit. If you need a map you can get one there before you begin hiking. From the summit you will remain on the AT north, across the top of Mount Williams and there are signs showing a shortcut to the day parking where you left your car.
