This is an easy-to-follow loop hike through the rolling hills of the Mammoth Cave N.P. backcountry. The terrain is up and down. I would rate it easy to moderate in places. The campsites are uninspiring but easy to find. Backcountry camping must be done at these sites unless you pick a site in the flood plain of the Green River that forms the southern border of the backcountry. A free permit, available at the visitor center, is required for backcountry camping. I hiked in early June and the ticks were awful. The Park literature discusses this issue. I can't say I wasn't warned. Another downside is the horseback traffic had created numerous large mudholes. Apparently, there are no trail conditions that these folks don't ride in. If the mud hole gets too bad for them, they just widen it by cutting out into the adjoining woods. They also have a penchant for tossing their drink cans where they happen to be when they are done with them. I collected a dozen cans from the trail during my hike.
