This trail starts at the Cumberland Gap in Middlesboro, KY. Backcountry camp permits are required and are free. Pick these up at the visitor center (606-248-2817). You can park securely at the Pinnacle overlook. You'll experience forests of oak, hickory, maple and pine. Spectacular views from rock overlooks over valley pastures, with mountains disappearing in the distance. At 12 miles you'll encounter the historic Hensley settlement which is currently being restored. You'll finish out at White Rocks, which are awesome. This trail has several short, but steep climbs so be prepared. You come off the mountain at Civic Park in Ewing Virginia. There are 4 backcountry campsites to choose from. Treated water is available at the Hensley settlement. There is a cabin that can be rented for $10.00 at Martin's fork. (A great value) Wilderness Tours (Tom Shadduck 606-248-2626) will provide a shuttle back to the Pinnacle for $20.00.
