You’ll start on an easy trail walking along the Cumberland River for two miles. You’ll pass a post marking the border of the State Park and the National Forest line. You’ll leave the trail and take a left, which will take you along an old logging trail gradually ascending back up to Hwy. 90. Do not miss your turn. If you continue straight, you’ll have to cross a river feeding the Cumberland River and you’ll end up on horse trails which can get you very lost. From the highway, you’ll have to cross and go left to where the trail begins again about 30 feet away. It’s an old logging road with a roadblock. After a mile the logging road will swerve right, but the trail will be behind another roadblock to the left. The real gem of this trail is an old fire lookout. It’s worth the climb to be on the hilltop and see it. From there, you’ll wind your way down back to the Cumberland River and meet up with the Moonbow Trail, which is actually the Sheltowee Trace. For two miles you’ll follow the river back to the tourist part of the park and the Falls. I think a chocolate ice cream cone from the snack bar is perfect at this time in the hike. You can either walk the road or hit the rest of the Cumberland River Trail back to your car.
