Elk City Lake Trail
This is one of the nicest hikes in Kansas that I have found. It is a moderately strenuous hike, I broke it up into 2 days of hiking and enjoyed it thoroughly. This hike takes you around giant limestone formations and through shady oak forests. The trail mainly winds around Elk City lake's many coves and offers plentiful senic outlooks. I camped at about the 5 mile mark and found plenty of solitude. I passed up the main camp, however because their is dirt road access and it shows. It is the least beautiful part of the trail, with car campers a-plenty. Besides that part the whole trail is really only frequented by backpackers who on the whole keep the trail looking nicely. Overall it is a great trail for a quick backpacking trip on the weekend.
