Description
Completed the two loops of the Knobstone this last weekend. Seems we entirely over estimated this trail. http://www.in.gov/dnr/outdoor/files/or-ktnorth.pdf . Starting at the Oxley Memorial Trailhead late late Friday night, we hiked about 3 miles north in the light of our head lamps. We set up camp at about 3 A.M. at a small clearing just minutes away from the intersection of the Spurgeon Hollow Loop. Slept in a bit the next morning and then on the trail by noon going north up the east side of the Spurgeon Hollow to the east side of the Delaney Loop. Got lost a bit at the Delaney peak but took a little break and back tracked a few and we were back on route. We cached about a gallon and a half of water at the Delanay Park on the west side of the Delaney Loop and we also carried a gallon extra than normal with us, but we could have lived without. Seems most of the creeks had enough water if we were dire and we passed several small ponds. Took a nice little lunch at the Delaney park next to the Delaney lake, where I took a brief shower and then we were on the move again. We planned to set up camp once passing the Spurgeon Hollow Lake. Once passing the lake we only found one good camping spot which we turned down because it was still to early in the day to stop. We ended up hiking all the way back to our original camp site, which is a little further than we planned on going but we were glad we did. It was a nice little site and it meant less miles in the morning. Up at around eight the next morning, a slow start, and then the three miles out. Seeing the trail that we previously hiked in the dark coming in, I realized how stupid it was to hike it in the dark. Sharp cliffs and muddy patches of dirt scattered throughout. Nice little hike though. Plenty of steep hills, beautiful and varying nature, with lots of wild life to boot. We kicked up a couple of deer and a family of turkeys, which my friend so hilariously commented on 'was the biggest duck he'd ever seen.' Plus there was beautiful spider that looked big enough to barely fit in my palm. The map read about ninteen miles but I believe it was less than that, maybe about 15 or 17. I was also tryin out my new KEEN H2 Newport sandles that seemed to hold up nicely and was comfortable enough to hike in but I did put socks on late saturday because of some oncoming hot spots. No more than with new boots though so I'll try em again on the next hike. Maybe they'll be broke in by then.
