This was a nice, easy hike for a Wednesday morning. The trail leads along a creek and to some nice ridgetop views of the Charles C. Deam Wilderness. The Forest Service has maintained the trail really well. In fact, a ranger who pulled in as I was having lunch asked me about the conditions of the trail with genuine interest. I was the only person in the forest that day, and it was awesome! I saw a couple deer and some nice big hawks. The trail follows a creek for a good stretch, then heads slowly upward to some nice views and finally, some big tall Sycamores rather than the pines that line most of the trail. There are some really nice campsites and plenty of water along the way if you want to make an easy overnighter out of it. The trailhead is at the Hickory Ridge Fire Tower site, and when I was finished, I climbed the tower and ate a sandwich while I took in the view, which was badass; save it till the end like I did for a nice reward! All in all, it was a great hike, and the solitude was unmatched. No people or horses (which you might encounter on the first or last mile which is a shared trail- the rest of the loop is foot traffic only).
