Hiking is easy to moderate. Goes thru lava fields, sage brush, hills and valleys. There are cracks in earth and various volcanic cones that dot the area. It can be hot. We went in mid May hen temps wer normally in 60 to 70 range. It was 10 to 15 degrees hotter than normal. Need to carry water because there is none. Each of us had 3 liter camel backs and carried an additional 2.5 liter bag and 2 water bottles each. Some weight. Used dehydrated meals. Have to use backpacking stove. It is true solitude; not a sound. If you are interested in geology it is a fasinating hike. Echo Canyon is a collapsed volcanic cone that you go off trail into. It is about 5 miles in and where we camped. Also, there are numerous caves in area to explore.Trail relatively easy to follow, but if you continue past Echo Canyon or adventure off trail, have a compass and topo map.
