The hike is tough, with steep inclines and uneven terrain. It gets hot and you get dehydrated easily. The way down is a lot easier than it is up. The trail is always uneven, never flat. There are three main hills/mountains you have to hike up/down. One takes you through a small forest! We made good time on the rolling plains part of the hike. It is about a 3-mile section that is constantly going up or down. Grass grows along the trail and ahu (rock cairns) mark the trail. It is hard to keep your footing on the small lava rock on the first mountain going down. It is usually windy. The wind is in your face going down; It is at your back on the way up. With heavy packs on, the 8-mile trek down took about 6 and a half hours. Going back took about 7. It is hard and grueling, but the beautiful beach and remote camping is worth it. The little bugs don't bite and There is a latrine and non-potable water. There is a brackish pond where you can swim in addition to the beach. You will love it.
