We always park at dally gap and do the loop ,up hemp top trail and down penatentary branch (dont ever go up) to jacks river trail and back to dally gap parking , do bring a old par of sneakers for the river crossing's , there all about knee deep but check with park officials if it's been raining it get pretty high and un-passible if it's been raining a wile , the worst forge is almost the last one , the rocks are at an angle and make it difficult to get a good footing ,a good stick always helps.the rest of the trail is moderate , only one bad spot where you have to climb steps at more than a 45% angle and after that the trail gets narrow with a long drop - off so be careful , i would not recommend this for kids under ten years old , if so keep them on a lanyard during these places. Its a good weekend hike and makes you feel like you accomplished something , have some cold ones waiting for you at the car , its always worth the wait . after doing the trail for five years it's a place of solitude for me , you rarley see folks , the only wildlife i've seen is squirels and birds , no bears or boars but i take head the warnings.
