The Chatooga River Trail is a ruggedly beautiful trail that traverses one of the wildest river corridors in the U.S. The trail goes back and forth from riverbottom to ridgetop many times along the route. The river starts in the Highlands area of North Carolina and makes its way south to form the border between Georgia and South Carolina. The river is one of the finest whitewater rivers in America. The Chatooga trail hooks up with both the Bartram trail and the Foothills trail. There are many access points and thus many different hikes that can be done in this area. We accessed the trail from the parking lot on the Georgia side of the river, just off of Hwy 76. We took a short hike of about a mile down the trail and a mile back. We did some boulder-hopping down along the river and got up-close and personal with some of the incredibly powerful looking rapids. The roar and speed of the whitewater was incredible. Looking at the exposed rocks was a great way to see just how powerful this river can be. Many of the rocks were very polished and full of holes from the force of the ever-flowing water. You can camp anywhere along the trail but I would advise you to look for a spot early as there were not too many flat spots that I saw. This is a beautiful area and I would encourage you to get out and enjoy it if you like to hike, camp or kayak. This is a great place to enjoy the great outdoors.
