Section 3 of the BMT is demanding from the start, rollercoastering to three summits with 1450 feet of elevation gain in the first three miles. We hiked 13 miles our first day to camp in a small open field with an unreliable spring close by. Fortunately, a previous night’s rain left us some puddles to filter from. Other campsites with dependable water sources are available, most notably, the old logging road at the top of Fall Creek Falls where we camped on our second night. From the summit of Rocky Mountain the trail is generally a downhill run to the highway in Cherry Log. This trail offers many long backcountry ambles through dense stands of Poplar, White Pine, Red Maple and Eastern Hemlock that offer plenty of shade and dramatic contrasts of light and shadows.
