The Metacomet Trail runs along a group of traprock ridges through the central part of Connecticut. Beginning just north of the city of Meriden, the initial ascent brings the hiker to Castle Craig, a brownstone tower which allows views of the southern Connecticut Valley to Long Island Sound. Heading north, the trail winds through land preserves, both private and public, astride rock quarries, residential and comercial developement using high access routes for a variety of excellent views of the valleys below. The trail runs through the communities of Kensington, Plainville, Farmington, West Hartford, Bloomfield, Simsbury, Avon and Granby. A number of historical sites can be found along the trail, including the Heublien Tower, a revolutionary war campsite and hospital and the 18th century Newgate Prison.
