One of the easiest ways to say you climbed a Mountain, and still live to tell about it! Deer Mountain is only about 10,000 feet tall, and only a climb of about 1000 feet...so that makes it PERFECT! For the intermediate hiker, this is an easy 4 hour hike. You begin your climb, with several sunny switchbacks on the southern side of Deer Mountain. Leave early in the day and this won't be quite so grueling! After about 30 minutes, the traail bends into the west side, then the North. Trees finally make the climb more pleasant. Switchbacks are long, but well travelled. Stop and enjoy views of the RMNP entrance and Long's Peak in the distance. Finally, the trail levels out as it reaches the tree covered top of Deer Mountain. After walking across most of the top,the most difficult climb awaits you. A scramble up about a 1/4 mile of boulders and rock finally gets you to the real peak of Deer Mountain. Enjoy views of Estes Park and Estes Lake. Look for the Geological Survey Marker on on of the rocks at the look out. After a well deserved break, your trip down is about 45 minutes.
