Description
This hike in the Indian Peaks Wilderness begins with a climb on old road. You'll see a chairlift at Eldora ski area on your left. There are many rocks, from fist to boulder-sized on the first part of the trial.

Middle portion of trail is not so much of a climb. It follows a beautiful, rocky stream bed much of the way, Middle Boulder Creek, according to the topo.

Then it turns back into forest for final climb to Lost Lake, including a couple wooden/log bridges. The view at the lake looks west/northwest to the Continental Divide.

The lake has a swamp area on some edges. Ducks were diving into the lake for dinner.

I also hiked an old mining road to a mine and piling visible for much of the hike. Possibly 300-500 ft. in elevation gain here, in maybe a half mile stretch. Views from here included looking back northeast toward the climbing Hessie Road, which eventually ends up at the Fourth of July trailhead and Buckingham Campground.

Beautiful hike, very peaceful, easy. Gain of around 800 feet up to Lost Lake.

Other forks available on this trail are:: Devil's Thumb Bypass, Devil's Thumb Trail (which could also forks to Woodland Lake Trail), or the King Lake Trail (which heads up to the Divide near Rollins Pass, easily accessible from Winter Park).

Directions to Hike
On south edge of Nederland, on Highway 72/119, take a right on 130 to Eldora. Go straight through this old mining town, on a gravel/dirt road to where it forks.

There is parking available here. Or, if you have a good 4-WD, take the left fork on up a stream/road past the old townsite of Hessie for 1/8 mile to another parking area.

Contact Information
Boulder Ranger District, 2995 Baseline Road, Room 110, Boulder, CO 80303 (303) 444-6600.

Camping permits for Indian Peaks Wilderness available at above address or Ace Hardware, Nederland.
