Description
A beautiful moderate hike to Throop Peak (9138'), 1200' elevation gain. From the parking area at Dawson Saddle, cross Highway 2 to the south and start up the switchbacks. The beautifully conditioned trail was extensively reworked in 1982 by the BSA and is wide and in perfect condition. As you top the switchbacks, you get a breathtaking view to the northwest of Mount Lewis and the inland deserts far below. As you continue south you can catch a glimpse of downtown Los Angeles way off to the west glittering like a tiny jewelled toy city. Now looking directly south you see your goal, Throop Peak and to the east, Mt. Burnham. The trail turns east and traverses the shady north slope of Throop. When you arrive at the Baden-Powell/Little Jimmy sign, turn right to the southwest and climb the ridge trail several hundred yards to Throop Peak. The view of the Sheep Mountain Wilderness and Mt. Baldy to the southeast is stunning. To the north, hundreds of miles of the inland desert is stretched out before you in a vast vista. Return the way you came. If you still feel frisky after Throop you can return to the Baden-Powell/Little Jimmy sign and head east to Mt. Burnham (8997')and Mt. Baden Powell (9399') which will add another 4 miles rt. There is no water on the trail, so if you want to bag all three peaks, bring plenty of H2O!

Directions to Hike
From the 210/Angeles Crest Highway Junction in La Canada/Flintridge drive 50 miles up the Angeles Crest to Dawson Saddle (7901'). There is a large parking area on the north side just after you crest the saddle.
