Two Friends and I went on a 3 day hike in the Mokelumne Wilderness. We started from the trailhead at Woodchuck Basin near Bear Valley and Lake Alpine. The first day we hiked 7.5 miles to Frog Lake via the Underwood Valley trail. This was a very strenuous hike as there was two giant ridges to cross. We spent the night at Frog Lake which does not have an outlet. The runoff just goes down into the lake and sets. Prime mosquito breeding. The second day we started our hike back out fromn Frog Lake to Wheeler Lake via the Wheeler Lake trail. This was a 3.5 mile hike from Frog Lake to Wheeler Lake with excellent views along the way. Wheeler Lake was great! Excellent fishing - beautiful lake. We spent the night at Wheeler Lake and the next day hiked the 3.5 miles back to Woodchuck Basin Trailhead. After having done this hike I will never go to Frog Lake again but will return to Wheeler Lake many times. Wheeler Lake can be done in a day hike (keep in mind afternoon thunderbumpers when heading back over the ridge). The trails were well marked - especially to Wheeler Lake. Wheeler Lake would be a good overnight trip in which to take the youngsters along.
