When you begin, you are in dirt, but are quickly into rocky ground. It is all uphill going to the top of Iron Mountain. In the spring, there are many wildflowers and running streams. Once at the top, you have a view of the Pacific Ocean, all of San Diego, and into Mexico. Some benevolent group has placed a free telescope at the peak to see distant points. To extend the hike, start at the Ellie Lane trailhead. Maps have been placed in a small shelter.
