In the northeast corner of Lassen Volcanic National Park, start at Butte Lake, just inside the park boundary, near the Butte Lake Campground. Follow the trail around the eastern edge of Butte Lake, across from an old lava flow that erupted from the Cinder Cone, through aspen forest, to Snag Lake. Good camping spots surround the lake, starting on the eastern edge, winding around the southern side, where excellant views of Cinder Cone are to be had. The trail is at about 6,000 feet and for the most part, quite level. This is the quietest place I have been for a very long time. For peace and solitude, as well as fascinating views of Mother Earth's chemistry, very well worth the hike. If ambitious, return around the west side of the lake, along the western side of the Cinder Cone, a geologic wonder which erupted in the mid 1600's.
