This is a perfect late-Winter/early-Spring trip. An easy 6 miles from the trailhead, Douglas Springs Campground is a lovely destination in itself. It also provides a great access point for dayhikes to Tanque Verde Peak (10 mi. rt) or Mica Mountain (12 mi. rt). Want to go a bit further? Add a few days to your backpacking trek by hiking up to Manning Camp (6 mi. one way) or one of the other campsites in the upper reaches of the Rincon Mountains. More-than-adequate water (use a filter) is available at the Douglas Spring Campground through late Spring, but the source tends to dry up in the Summer. Bear boxes are provided for food storage. Permits are required. Due to the easy access to Tucson, Douglas Spring Trail is heavily used by dayhikers, but only a relatively small percentage of those hikers actually get out to the Campground. You will, however, have an opportunity to answer dozens of questions as you hike the last couple of miles on your return to Tucson.
