"My husband, our youngest son (18) and I hiked the mountain on Christmas Eve. The weather was great (could have been colder), but the views were spectacular. Difficult hike with a 50 pound pack (hubby wore - prepping for a long hike beginning in Apr 07). I was born and raised in Union County and had never hiked this mountain to the top before...glad to say that I have now. Loved the shelter at the top as well."

"I really enjoy Blood Mountain, Last summer I took a short trip from Woody Gap to Testatee Gap with a group, the hike was amazing, and the shelter was a blast! A great hike over all and one of the only hikes with views comparable to that of Mt. Mitchell NC which I did last year. Excellent hike."

"I hiked Blood Mountain with several of my sorority sisters and it was AMAZING!!! It was such an awesome hike with spectacular views! I will definitely be doing this hike again and will have to spend the night! It was a total "mountain-top" experience! "

"I have been returning to this mountain top off and on for the past 6 or 7 years for different things. Day Hikes, Backpacking, Meteor Shower watching, and most recently to ask my future wife to marry me... Worked out great, we had the world to ourselves up there!"

"Hiked today, 11/24/06 with my 2.5 year old daughter on my back. I had a blast despite the extra 35 lbs on my back !

My daughter and I were thrilled with the view from the top.

I kept asking myself "how could the view be any better?" as we were ascending, but once we reached the peak, the view was 100 X better.

    Well worth the trip!"

"We walked with 3 Webelos II Scouts from Lake Winfield Scott up Slaughter Gap and Back along Jared Gap. Ceiling low, not crowded, and great. Picking a different route next weekend. "

"I've grown up hiking the AT in Georgia and I now explore the Lake Tahoe Basin. Though I've experienced the beautiful and rugged Sierra, Blood Mountain remains to be a symbol of adventure, solitude and friendships to me. Great memories and powerful sunsets."

"Hiked it 9/20/04 on a blissful fall day and what a great view up there.Highly recommend this for any one that can walk up 1800 feet in 2 miles. It's well worth the hour and a half it took my 50 year old bones to get there. Will go back to spend the night soon!!This would be great at night. "

"My Husband asked me to marry him on Blood Mountain!! The shelter is great , keep an eye out for its resident skunk, its very sweet actually. The stars at night are incrediable. Your away from all the city lights and they are just everywhere, makes you feel close to heaven..."

"A great place to night-hike up to from Woods Hole for the nobos. Great views, and during the day, when it's not too hazy, you can see Springer from the rocks around the side of the shelter. The shelter itself is pretty nice, but I've heard stories of many critters camping out in there..."

"One of the best! Very neat stone shelter"

"I've been hiking Blood Mountain since I was maybe five years old (I turn 24 next week), and have always been fond of finding this rustic, stone cabin, perched atop the tallest peak on the Georgia stretch of the Appalachian Mountains. I last hiked Blood Mountain back in December, and upon reaching the top, told my friends that "We haven't reached the top until we reach the cabin!" I will probably hike the mountain again in May, and emphatically look forward to it!"

    Wendy, 03/03/04User Rating:
"The view alone is well worth the long and strenuous hike (if hiked when hot). I went with a group of girls one year when I was about 14yrs old. I'd do it all over again without a second thought. No words could explain the view at night or in the morning when I awoke."

"Hiked it yesterday.Great day with wonderful views.Ran into a number of thru hikers that had left Springer Mountain headed for Maine already. Descended via the Reese Trail not sure I would do that again added little to the experience except distance.Next time will spend the night. It kicked my ass."

"I give this shelter high marks for views and the fact that it's a very solid rock structure. However, there's no water nearby, so pack plenty with you. I've stayed here a few times and the mice can sometimes be a big problem. Also, be aware that it's on the most hiked section of the AT in Georgia, so don't expect a lot of solitude when the weather cooperates. I have, however, never spent the evening up there when it was crowded. They mainly go home when the sun sets.

"I stayed there july 04 and there was a polecat coming into the shelter every 10 minutes of the night "

    Coulter Redding, 01/20/06User Rating:
"This is a great hike (absolutely breathtaking views) with a pretty neat shelter at the top of Blood Mtn. The shelter itself was built by the CCC's, and it has been standing for several years. The mice can be annoying, but the shelter is good to shield you from any strong winds you might face once you reach the top."

"I have hiked Blood dozens of times in all sorts of weather but last weekend I could see Atlanta from the summit for the first time. Solitude is rare since this is a very popular hike and only 90 minutes from the northern reaches of I-285, but on weekdays you may achieve it. The scenery is always spectacular."
