The Pinnacle Mountain Trail (about 2 1/2 miles) is located outside of and is convenient to Little Rock. The Mountain is about 1000 feet tall and is shaped like a cone. You may be tempted to think it is a volcano, but it was actually formed by uplift and erosion of a rock layer. The trail starts to the left just after you pass the restroom and pavilion. If you find yourself at the Little Maumelle River you have gone too far. This is a steep trail and you really need to be in shape, especially if you are going to do the whole trail. Bring water because you will probably want some at the top. Children should be supervised. The trail immediately starts climbing a series of switchbacks and it is not long before you start experiencing views of the surrounding area. Eventually you come to a field of boulders where some have been arranged as stairsteps. From here you can see the Arkansas River. You will also notice that there are signs along the way indicating your elevation, in hundred foot increments if I remember correctly. There are also well made interpretive signs highlighting the geology, flora, and fauna of the area. When you get to the top you want to just sit and look around for a while (REST!). From the summit you can see the buildings of Downtown Little Rock off in the distance, the surrounding mountains, and the Arkansas River. When you are through looking around you can either go back down the way you came (quick and easy) or go back down the other side. Be warned: Going down the other (Eastern) side is steeper than it was coming up (West) and in some places it is hard to tell where the trail is. If you go this route you will come out at an old road that will take you to the trailhead on the other side of the mountain (You can access the 220 mile Ouachita Trail to Oklahoma here, too). It then turns right and goes around the base of the mountain, past the Little Maumelle River, and back to the trailhead/parking area.
