The Little Missouri Trail follows the Little Missouri River from near the headwaters, about 5 miles above the Little Missouri Falls, to the Winding Stairs, about 2 miles below the Albert Pike campgrounds. This is an excellent trail for everyone from beginners to the experienced backpacker who just needs to take a nice walk in the woods. Going from north to south is mainly downhill or fairly level with only a few small climbs. The views are fantastic and some say this is the best hike in Arkansas. The trail crosses the river and several small creeks along the way so watch out for high water. This river is subject to flash floods which can leave you without a way across for some time. I like to start at the northern trailhead and hike to the intersection of the Little Missouri River and Crooked Creek. There is a nice caming area there and the rock formations are really fun to explore. There is another camping area about a mile down the trail that is very nice itself and has a good swimming hole. These camping areas are well used so please leave them a little cleaner than you found them. (I just dont understand someone wanting to trash up such a beutifull area). From here the trail keeps heading down the river, passing a number of wildlife food plots along the way. There is at least one or two warm water springs along the trail, the last one coming out of a large rock bluff near the Albert Pike campground. The trail goes through the campground and down river another couple of miles to the Winding Stairs Recreation area. This a fantastic reward to your efforts as this area of the river is fantastic and is full of big rock formations that the river winds through. A great hike on a great trail, built and maintained by great people
