I first hiked this trail in 1984. After 2 more subsequent hikes in the 80's, my memories are that the trail was exhilirating, beautiful, adventurous. I have since backpacked in Colorado and other places west. I would think that this trail would pale in comparison, but to someone starting out, or use to eastern mountains, this trail is splendid. It winds across and around the creek, and affords views of ridges, small cascades, and floodplains. In winter, I encountered deer, razorback, eagles, and once- a white owl. I would recommend it in winter for very hardy backpackers, but single and teen digit temperatures can occur. Once, when parked at Shady Lake, we dropped our packs to make it back quicker, only to find a non-starting car. We nearly froze that night! This trail is special in my opinion because it had all the qualities a nature lover could expect, solitude, exciting fords, seasonal variation, etc. Of course, that was twenty years ago. Late this spring, I'm returning for the first time since, and can't wait to see it again- especially the fast flowing Cossatot river on the trail's eastern flank. P.S. Water was always plentiful in spring and winter, and we used to drink it fresh- I would think it should be boiled or treated however.
