The 1st 5 miles are mainly pine straw-covered trails largely following ridge lines and pleasant. The 5-9 miles consisted of switchbacks along steep precipices, rocky outgrowths and rock strewn trails some areas of which are overgrown. These rocky paths were difficult to cross in places due to rock instability, overgrowth of weeds, and in one section, fallen trees. You really have to watch your step so as to avoid turning an ankle. Furthermore, it was raining when I made the hike and the rocks were slippery. Another complication was the paucity of trail markers in this region of the trail. I did not find a good water source so take plenty of water with you. Overall, the rocky portion of the trail was a challenge to me but well worth the effort at the end (I encountered the rocks twice as I returned the same way....it took me 4 hours going to reach Clairmont Gap and 4 hours to return to the trail head). Because of the foliage and trail locations, there were not many opportunities for long views. Potential camping sites are better in the first 5 miles of the trail.
