Jerry Lake / Chippewa Lobe Interpretive Loop - backpacking pictures
Near Medford in Chequamegon National Forest, Wisconsinby pitts Three days of hiking in the Chequamegon national forest. This the the fusion of two hikes in Eric Hansen's "Hiking Wisconsin" book. The first is the Jerry Lake segment of the Ice Age Trail. The second is the Chippewa Lobe Intrepretive Loop. Outstanding hike, a real gem of a trip. The Chippewa Lobe is rather rugged and fairly wet and buggy. The camp site is outstanding, well worth the hassle, but it's NOT a trail for beginners. Sections of the Jerry Lake hike may be a bit rough as well, but in general it's well marked and fairly easy.
There is lots of water. Required would be waterproof boots and treking poles, in my opinion. Also bring some good bug repellent, 30% DEET with controlled release or you will get sucked dry.
The crossing of the Yellow River is not for those scared of getting wet. I didn't even get my boots wet crossing it, but it's tricky and a serious accident could be the end result.
Jerry lake is a "destination" and is quite nice, but it's the hike that tells the story and not the destination with this hike. So don't rush the trip to the lake because if you do you will realize you have "missed it" once you are there. There is a LOT to take in here, real sensory overload IF you take the time to notice.
